Here is a story that illustrates the most important lesson I learned in consulting with clients. A major aerospace company was designing a prototype for their next generation airplane. (That's as much as I can tell you about the project.)

They were blasting a ton of data down a serial line that was a critical part of the system. Everything worked fine in the lab. The system was able to handle maximum data line rates, the protocol was up to spec, and the multiple devices all responded properly.

Then we took it out to the field...

You can almost anticipate what happened next. The system did not want to come up after being attached to two other devices, an HBA and a switch. They checked everything physical: the cabling, the connections, power switches, individual cards, etc, etc.

We needed to capture the boot up sequence of the line in order to debug what what going on. Note: Not all protocol analyzers can do this, so make sure the one you use has this capability.
